LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

I recently joined the UKZN Foundation after spending seventeen years as an academic at this institution. When I joined the university, my goal was to serve students. However, the Foundation has created an opportunity for me to serve the entire university community which includes students, academics, researchers, schools and colleges and the various strategic projects of UKZN.

I believe strongly in building and nurturing relationships. As I ease into my role at the Foundation, I together with my development team will be contacting and visiting existing donors, prospective donors and alumni.

We are currently putting together an exciting fund raising campaign which will bring alumni, students, staff and members of the public together to drive UKZN forward. One of our new initiatives is to bring our retired alumni back into our fold as volunteers on our "Goodwill Ambassadors" programme. You will be kept informed via e-mail and through our website and social media as our projects unfold.

I encourage you to get involved and make a commitment to "Inspire Greatness" at UKZN.

Professor Anesh Maniraj Singh
Executive Director

Message from the Executive Director: UKZN Foundation Annual Report 2015

2015 will be remembered as the year that, across the country, university students brought their concerns about the level of university fees and the burden this places on so many students to the attention of the government, the universities and the public at large with #FeesMustFall.

The challenge of raising funding for student bursaries and scholarships has long been a key focus area for the UKZN Foundation and 2015 was no exception. Of the R140 million receipted by the Foundation in 2015 approximately R24 million was earmarked for bursaries and scholarships. This student funding complements the funds allocated from the University’s own resources and the numerous scholarship and bursary endowments given over the years by various bequestors and benefactors.

Other significant donations received in 2015 supported a diverse range of programmes such as establishing breast milk banks; understanding the impact of climate change; supporting rural farmers; HIV/ AIDS interventions and various outreach programmes furthering Maths and Science education in addition to the core funding received for the Africa Centre for Health and Population Studies and the Health Economics and Aids Research Division (HEARD). Further information about some of these donations and the projects they support is found elsewhere in our Annual Report.

2015 saw the Foundation emerge from a difficult period and a new team develop and meld into a coherent, mutually supportive group to take the Foundation forward. Good progress was made in a number of areas and some of the highlights of 2015 are

  • The adoption of our new logo and tagline and the roll-out of our new look and touchpoints with the brochures, folders, banners and various handouts all sharing a clean, fresh look.
  • The redevelopment and launch of our website for which we have received a number of compliments and which incorporates the facility for on-line credit card donations.
  • Reviving our bi-annual newsletter, Development Brief, which was given a makeover in line with our new look, and also the launch of a complementary on-line newsletter, Development On-Line, to enhance communication with our donors.
  • Development of our BBBEE Guidelines and Opportunities document to market the opportunities the UKZN and UKZN Extended Learning in conjunction with the Foundation can offer businesses in fulfilling their BBBEE obligations.
  • Our forays into the new (for us) field of fundraising appeals with limited monetary impact at this stage but the opportunity to raise our profile and plant seeds that may only yield results in a few years’ time – and from which we have learned some invaluable lessons so that we can keep improving. An encouraging sign is the number of new monthly debit orders have been initiated arising from these campaigns.

To the many friends, donors and supporters of UKZN and the UKZN Foundation: thank you all for your passion, your commitment and your donations all of which are essential in enabling UKZN to achieve its goals.

Jane Meyerowitz
Executive Director
